Back pain
The Health and Safety Executive in the UK reported 17.3 million people (over 3rd of the adult population) suffer from Back pain, the most common work-related illness where 1 million new cases are reported each year. Pain is often sudden and sharp, but causes have often been building over some time.
Static sitting for long periods of time causes postural stress. We naturally fidget to reduce this, but it is often not enough. When circulation is reduced the accumulation of metabolic waste causes muscular fatigue, this strain and fatigue increases with awkward postures, reaching and repetitive movement.
The correct seated posture recommendation is:
- Supportive, adjustable chair set at correct height
relative to desk height - Top of monitor screen set at eye level
- Monitor stand used to correct height
- Document holder positioned for minimal head movement
- Monitor screen arm's length from seated position
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is the generic term for pain felt around joints caused by repetitive movements. Aggravation, inflammation and damage caused over months or even years due to overuse often before pain occurs.
- Common RSI complaints include:
- Cramp of the hand - pins and needles sensation
- Carpal/Cubital tunnel syndrome
- Bursitis
- Document holder positioned for minimal head movement
- Frozen shoulder
- Osteoarthritis
Common Causes are:
- Slouching or hunching when sitting
- Standing with poor postural awareness
- Awkward working postures
- Incorrect desk set up
- Lifting incorrectly
Testimonials
M BIRD Marathon Runner
I went to see Janet 3 days before the Brighton Marathon extremely worried about calf and hamstring pain. Janet totally put me at ease and give me really good advice with specific stretches for muscles demonstrating and instrucitng how to perform them. The sports massage was great and totally assisted with my pain enabling me to run in a lot less pain. The consultation was an education for me personally on my muscles and targeting specific muscle groups for running. The tips and hints I received were brilliant (I have run marathons for over 10 years) and the knowledge I received was gold! I would very much recommend Janet as she was recommended to me by someone that was experiencing pain in running training. I went into the session hoping for some reassurance and assistance pre run and come out with this and whole lot more!"
